High-Precision Assembly Cell for a Medical Device Manufacturer
A custom assembly and inline-inspection cell that raised first-pass yield and throughput on a precision medical device.
The problem
A medical device manufacturer was assembling a precision, multi-part product by hand. Manual assembly limited throughput, and small variations in placement led to inconsistent quality and a first-pass yield that could not keep up with rising demand.
The parts were small and delicate, tolerances were tight, and every unit needed verification — but inspection happened after assembly, so defects were caught late and rework was costly.
Our approach
Cerebrus designed a custom assembly cell built around gentle, precise part handling. A multi-axis Cartesian robot placed components to tight tolerance, with tooling engineered specifically for the delicate parts.
Machine vision was integrated inline to verify each critical step as it happened, rejecting non-conforming units immediately rather than after full assembly. The controls, safety, and operator interface were developed together and the cell was built and commissioned under our ISO 9001:2015 quality system.
The result
The cell increased throughput well beyond the manual process while improving first-pass yield through consistent, verified placement.
Inline inspection caught issues at the point they occurred, cutting rework and scrap, and gave the manufacturer documented, repeatable quality suited to their regulated environment.
